There are many lower leg muscles, however only two are known by most people. The two most powerful lower leg muscles are located in your calf, they are known as the gastrocnemius and the soleus (which is beneath the gastrocnemius). Located on the front of your lower leg muscles is the anterior tibilis, commonly refered to shin splits. The achilles tendon is located the back side of your leg, towards your heel. In many cases, the achilles tendon is the cause of lower leg muscle pain, but this is not always the case.
The gastrocnemius is longest lower leg muscle. It is located on the femur and passes over the knee and ankle. Gastrocnemius is a crucial part of the plantar flexor - but it also flexes and extends the knee in many cases. The plantar flexion is supported by the soleus which goes across the posterior tibia and fibula, and ends up at the achilles tendon. Gastrocnemius and soleus are countered by the tibialis anterior, which revert the ankle. Everting of the ankle is done by the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis.
The lower leg muscles are divided into four main "elements" that contain various muscles of the lower leg which are listed below.
Anterior Lower leg Muscles
Location: The front part of the shin.
These lower leg muscles pull the foot and toes upward when needed. They also have a major role in assisting in turning your foot in an inward motion.
The Lateral Lower leg Muscles
Location: Alongside the outside of the lower leg.
These lower leg muscles pull your foot outwards. They are the main resource when you want to point your foot a certain direction.
Posterior Lower leg Muscles
Location: The General Calf Area
These all make up your calf region. The gastrocnemius is short and thick, and is also considered to be the most visible lower leg muscle. The soleus is located underneath the gastrocnemius, connecting them all the the achilles tendon.
Deep Posterior Lower Leg Muscles
Location: Very Deep within the calf region.
The tibialis posterior aids in moving your foot inward. The flexor digitorum lower leg muscle controls all your toes, except the hallucus longus controls your big toe.
